1. What is it?

Springers (Elops machnata) are shoaling, predatory fish found in estuaries and shallow coastal waters. Their estuarine dependence makes them susceptible to overfishing. This species is rated as a no-sale species within South Africa.

2. How was it caught or farmed?

Only recreational fishers with special permit may catch springers following a daily bag limit (5 pp/pd). Recreational fishers are not allowed to sell their catches.

3. Where is it from?

Springers are found in waters along the South Western Cape up to Mozambique. Due to its no-sale status, management consists of monitoring and permit enforcement on a local scale.
