The WWF-SASSI Retailer/Supplier Participation Scheme (RSPS) Report 2024

The ocean’s story is one of both fragility and resilience – and this year’s WWF-SASSI RSPS Report 2024 captures that journey perfectly. It celebrates the progress made, shines a light on retailers and supplier progress, and charts a bold course toward a future where all seafood is sustainably and responsibly sourced.
Seafood continues to be important in our South African diets and culture and consumption has risen from approximately 325 000 tonnes in 2022 to an estimated 350 000 tonnes in 2024.
That’s where the Retailer/Supplier Participation Scheme (RSPS) comes in. Each participant is on their own unique sustainable seafood journey with time-bound, public commitments, but they’re united by a common goal – transforming the seafood market. Through collaboration, transparency, and accountability, they’re on the road to make sustainable seafood sourcing the new standard, not the exception. WWF-SASSI supports them in meeting their public commitments and driving real, measurable change.
The 2024 report also shares key insights from the WWF-SASSI Consumer Survey, revealing how even more South Africans are embracing seafood and how consumers increasingly expect retailers and suppliers to ensure sustainable sourcing.
The report is also useful for anyone who wants to learn about the future steps for WWF-SASSI’s Retailer/Supplier Participation Scheme members and gain valuable insights into how Fisheries Improvement Projects can drive sustainable seafood.
