Garrick

As per the Responsible Angler Guidelines, responsible recreational fishers are requested to not retain but rather tag and release any species caught that are listed as Endangered, Threatened or Vulnerable on a local species list (E.g. National Biodiversity Assessment) or international list (E.g. The IUCN Red List for Threatened Species).

Garrick (Lichia amia) are large, predatory fish species found along the South African coastline from Cape Point to Cape Vidal. It is highly dependent on estuaries which serve as a nursery area for juveniles. Garrick were nationally listed as Vulnerable in the 2018 National Biodiversity Assessment. This species is rated as a no-sale species within South Africa, only recreational fishers with a permit may catch them following a minimum size (> 70 cm TL) and a daily bag limit (2 pp/pd). Recreational fishers are not allowed to sell their catches.
