The Journey Of Seafood

In 2024, the WWF-SASSI Retailer Supplier Participation Scheme (RSPS) put the spotlight on traceability. So, what exactly is traceability? It’s all about being able to follow a product’s entire journey—from where it starts to where it ends up. When it comes to seafood, this means tracking it from the moment it’s caught or farmed, right through to when it hits your plate at a restaurant or lands on the shelves of your favourite store. In short, it’s the journey from boat to plate. We are hopeful that there are businesses that show commitment to responsible practices, traceability being one of them.

This year’s annual RSPS report, The Hidden Costs of Your Seafood, and our first-ever roundtable event with the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), both zoomed in on the importance of traceability. WWF-SASSI and MSC have even collaborated to develop a handy resource for businesses to equip, Benefits of Traceability and 5 Easy Steps to Start Tracing the Seafood in Our Supply Chains. The actions and ongoing effort and engagement from RSPS members show dedication to boosting South Africa’s seafood market while ensuring sustainability remains top of mind.  WWF-SASSI is proud to be working hand-in-hand with influential retailers & suppliers on this journey of seafood market transformation.
