WWF-SASSI’s Exciting Cook-Off Extravaganza Celebrated 20 Years of Sustainable Seafood Choices

Last Summer, the V&A Waterfront Battery Park at V&A was abuzz with culinary excitement as WWF-SASSI (Southern Africa Sustainable Seafood Initiative) hosted a sensational sustainable seafood summer cook-off. This celebratory event marked two decades of promoting sustainable seafood choices and conserving our oceans.

The cook-off extravaganza featured renowned WWF-SASSI corporate funder and partner cooking teams including Vodacom, BRECO Seafoods, Checkers, Pick n Pay, Nedbank, Two Oceans Aquarium and Woolworths. Each team was kitted out and received a mystery box including sustainable yellowtail and mussels, challenging their culinary expertise to craft delectable dishes using WWF-SASSI green-listed seafood – and it did not disappoint!

Distinguished celebrity judges include esteemed TV chefs Zola Nene (MasterChef) and Chris Kastern (Ultimate Braai Master Semi-finalist), alongside wild food innovator Roushanna Gray (Veld & Sea). Also joining the judges’ line-up to evaluate the teams’ final creations are WWF-SASSI’s chef ambassadors; indigenous forager Chef Gregory Henderson; award-winning cookbook author, Chef Jason Whitehead; and actor Carishma Basday. The coveted title of ‘Recognition for the Best Sustainable Seafood Dish this Summer’ was awarded to the Checkers Team!
