Striped catshark

As per the Responsible Angler Guidelines, responsible recreational fishers are requested to not retain but rather tag and release any species caught that are listed as Endangered, Threatened or Vulnerable on a local species list (E.g. National Biodiversity Assessment) or an international list (E.g. The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species).

Striped catsharks/pyjama sharks (Poroderma africanum) are bottom-dwelling, residential and endemic sharks found from the South Western Cape coast up to KwaZulu-Natal. Striped catsharks are listed as Least Concern in the 2018 National Biodiversity Assessment and are one of the few shark species listed as Protected on the South African list of Threatened or Protected Species (TOPS). This species is rated as a no-sale species within South Africa, only recreational fishers with a permit may catch them following a daily bag limit (1 pp/pd). Recreational fishers are not allowed to sell their catches.
