Brindle bass rockcod

Brindle bass rockcod (Epinephelus lanceolatus) are large, predatory fish found in estuaries, coral and rock reefs (often with caves). It was a popular trophy fish due to its large size and inquisitive nature making it easy to approach. This led to a rapid decline in abundances. Brindle bass rockcod were nationally listed as Vulnerable in the 2018 National Biodiversity Assessment. Brindle bass rockcod are fully protected in South African waters and fishing of any kind is strictly prohibited.
